Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena Monday approved the recruitment of 1,463 healthcare workers, including 701 nurses and 762 paramedical staff, according to an official statement. The recruitment process will be held on an outsourced basis by individual hospitals, it added.

The decision comes following recommendations of the Dr SK Sarin Committee, which was formed by the Delhi High Court citing inadequacy of the health infrastructure and availability of hospital beds. It had directed the government to file a status report on how it plans to ensure the medical infrastructure keeps up with the city’s population.

The court had also raised the issue of shortage of manpower.

In response, Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj said the government has been raising the issue with the L-G for more than a year and a half. “We are very thankful to the High Court as well as the Dr Sarin Committee for bringing forth these issues that have been continuously flagged by the elected government but the L-G had been ignoring them,” he said.

Several letters were written to Saxena because recruitment of doctors and paramedical staff is a reserved subject that can be done only by the L-G, he claimed. “However, until the time the directions were given by the High Court, the L-G had been saying that doctors and paramedical staff cannot be recruited on contract and the L-G office used to maintain that contractual staff recruitment involves corruption,” he said.
