In a relief for soldiers, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday laid the foundation stone for the construction of a Foot Over Bridge (FOB) at the Rajputana Rifles Regimental Centre in Delhi Cantonment, near Ring Road.
The bridge, a long-pending demand of the soldiers posted there, will be built to make their daily movement safe and convenient, officials said.
The Rajputana Rifles Centre is spread across both sides of Ring Road, with training grounds located separately from the main campus. The lack of either an FOB or a subway has compelled soldiers to use an underground drainage culvert to cross the road and reach the parade ground.
Speaking at the event, Gupta said that for years, soldiers had struggled to cross the road using a narrow underpass, which becomes waterlogged during the rainy season.
“This new FOB will put an end to those problems. For us, the safety and comfort of our soldiers is the top priority,” she said, adding that the project will be completed without any delay or shortage of funds.
The event was also attended by Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh, Lieutenant General Bhavnish Kumar, MP Bansuri Swaraj.
The new FOB will be completed in 180 days, Singh said.
The CM said the bridge will finally give soldiers a safe and smooth way to cross, ending the daily difficulties they face while commuting and training. She assured that problems related to army camps and cantonments will always be addressed as a priority.
At the event, Singh hit out at previous governments, alleging that despite the soldiers’ persistent demand for a safe crossing for almost 30 years, no action was taken.
“Earlier governments spent crores on publicity but didn’t allocate even a rupee for this vital bridge. As soon as our government took up the issue, we approved the funds, floated the tender, and began work without delay. By March next year, the bridge will be ready,” he said.
He added that the bridge will not just be made of concrete and steel, but will also stand as a symbol of respect and gratitude to the brave soldiers who dedicate their lives to protecting the nation.
