Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated an automated multi-level parking facility at the M Block in Greater Kailash 1, announcing that around 100 similar facilities will be set up across the Capital to provide a permanent solution to the city’s parking troubles.
The facility, constructed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) at a cost of Rs 63.74 crore, can accommodate 399 vehicles.
Addressing the issue of parking, Gupta said, “Parking is a major concern in Delhi. It causes traffic jams and road chaos, and often leads to disputes among people. Our government is making every effort to resolve the city’s parking problem. We believe that parking facilities should be provided wherever technology permits.” She added that the government will offer all possible financial support for developmental works.
According to MCD officials, the facility spans 2,245 square meters and includes a basement, ground floor, and a seven-story structure, with a parking capacity of 57 cars per level. The project also features an underground water tank with a capacity of 1.5 lakh liters and special provisions for firefighting, officials added.
Five car lifts have been installed for entry and exit at the Greater Kailash parking lot, and the facility has received in-principle approval from the Delhi Fire Services, officials said.
“The exterior of the parking complex will be used to generate revenue through advertising, with 30 percent going to the agency and 70 percent to the MCD,” officials added.
Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood described the modern parking system as a key component of urban infrastructure and a great example of effective planning. “It will help reduce traffic congestion in the Capital and provide safe, organised parking facilities for citizens,” he said.
Taking a dig at the previous governments, Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh said, “Despite having sufficient funds, previous Delhi governments did nothing for the people of the Capital except indulge in corruption.”
Greater Kailash MLA Shikha Roy stated that this project will be a boon for shopkeepers and customers. Local residents can also avail the facility by paying a monthly fee, he added.
Meanwhile, MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar expressed confidence that other ongoing development projects by the civic body will also be completed soon.
