Delhi News Live Updates: Punjab sees 70% drop in stubble burning as delayed harvest and crackdown curb farm fires

Punjab has recorded a significant drop in farm-fire incidents this year, with 415 cases reported between September 15 and October 21, compared to 1,510 in the same period last year, according to the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB). The decline is attributed to delayed paddy harvesting due to rains and flood damage, as well as stricter monitoring and awareness campaigns against stubble burning.

Tarn Taran and Amritsar reported the highest number of farm fires, with 136 and 120 cases respectively. So far, fines worth Rs 9.4 lakh have been imposed, and 170 FIRs registered under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Overall, Punjab witnessed 10,909 farm fires in 2024, a 70% drop from 36,663 in 2023.

Police and civil administration, led by DGP Gaurav Yadav and Special DGP Arpit Shukla, are personally monitoring stubble-burning hotspots, conducting awareness campaigns, and taking legal action to enforce Supreme Court and CAQM directives aiming for zero stubble burning.

Delhi News Live Updates: Delhi man convicted of attempt to murder client using axe

A Delhi court has convicted a man, Ravi, in an attempt to murder case, ruling that the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Principal District and Sessions Judge Anju Bajaj Chandna delivered the order on October 8, confirming that Ravi caused head injuries to Dr Padam Singh using a dangerous weapon — an axe. The court noted that the recovery of a blood-stained weapon strengthened the prosecution’s case.

Although medical reports described the injury as simple, the judge said the use of a dangerous weapon on a vital body part demonstrated Ravi’s intention to inflict potentially fatal harm.

The attack occurred in April 2023 when Dr Singh visited Ravi to inquire about the completion of a construction project. The incident was registered at RK Puram police station under Section 307 of the IPC.

The court has scheduled arguments on the quantum of sentence for October 29, while the conviction marks a significant step in holding perpetrators accountable for violent assaults in the capital. (PTI)

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa accused the AAP of blaming Diwali for the spike in air quality levels to appease a particular community, calling it “the words of those who admire Aurangzeb and Akbar”.

Showing purported videos of people covering their faces and burning stubble, Sirsa alleged, “… Farmers don’t want to burn stubble, but they were told to do so. They’ve been forced to burn stubble by covering their faces, so that this stubble can have an impact on Delhi.”
