Punjab has recorded a significant drop in farm-fire incidents this year, with 415 cases reported between September 15 and October 21, compared to 1,510 in the same period last year, according to the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB). The decline is attributed to delayed paddy harvesting due to rains and flood damage, as well as stricter monitoring and awareness campaigns against stubble burning.
Tarn Taran and Amritsar reported the highest number of farm fires, with 136 and 120 cases respectively. So far, fines worth Rs 9.4 lakh have been imposed, and 170 FIRs registered under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Overall, Punjab witnessed 10,909 farm fires in 2024, a 70% drop from 36,663 in 2023.
Police and civil administration, led by DGP Gaurav Yadav and Special DGP Arpit Shukla, are personally monitoring stubble-burning hotspots, conducting awareness campaigns, and taking legal action to enforce Supreme Court and CAQM directives aiming for zero stubble burning.
