Decongesting NH8- In the works: Three alternate routes between Gurgaon and Delhi

According to the plan, the Haryana government is in the process of preparing a feasibility survey for three new roads between the two cities.

After Gurgaon introduced the concept of a ‘car-free’ day each week to decongest four major stretches in the city, the Department of Town and Country Planning (DTCP) and the NCR planning board will soon begin working on three alternate routes between Gurgaon and Delhi to decongest National Highway (NH) 8.

According to the plan, the Haryana government — including officials from Faridabad and Rohtak — are in the process of preparing a feasibility survey for three new roads between the two cities. They are also looking into creating a bypass between Gurgaon and Faridabad.

The Gurgaon department has been asked to look into land details and mappings, said an official.

Sources said the department has been asked to submit the report in 15 days to the NCR planning board.

Once the feasibility report is submitted, DTCP officials will either meet someone at the chief secretary level or the secretary of the union urban development ministry, along with officials from the Delhi and Haryana governments this week.

Capture“According to the plan, the first part is to connect the Northern Peripheral Road (NPR) — also called the Dwarka Expressway — with the nearest point in Dwarka. This would divert a significant volume of Gurgaon-bound traffic from West Delhi,” said P Raghavendra Rao, additional chief secretary of the Haryana DTCP.

He added that the board is also planning to connect the NPR through Urban Extension Road 2 (UER 2) to UER 1, which was proposed by the Delhi government to decongest roads in the capital.

Secondly, the board has proposed to connect Nelson Mandela Marg with NH8 — a 4 km stretch that will pass through Ghitorni, Vasant Kunj and Garden Estate Apartments in Gurgaon.

According to the officials, two plans are being worked on in this case. “There are two options to extend the road – the first to cut the Ridge after which the road can be directly connected to Ambience Mall. Secondly, if the ridge cannot be cut (due to environmental issues), then N M Road will have to be extended till MG Road,” said Rao. He added that this could be a National Highway too.
The third route will connect M G Road to NH-8 via the Ambience Mall road.

DTCP officials said this route would go via the outer boundary of DLF’s colonies in sectors 24 and 25, and meet MG Road near Arjangarh. The estimated length of the proposed corridor is 7 km, with 1.5 km in Delhi. Currently, MG Road meets NH-8 at IFFCO Chowk.

Rao added that planning is underway on constructing a bypass from the Southern Peripheral Road, coming from Faridabad, so that traffic coming to IFFCO Chowk and subsequently the NH-8 can be diverted.

However, this is not the first time plans have been made to connect the two cities. Discussions on a route connecting Vasant Kunj and DLF Phase III have been on for over a decade, but nothing concrete has been done by the Gurgaon administration or the Delhi government.
