The Delhi Cabinets decision to bestow deemed university status on the Delhi College of Engineering, and renaming it as Delhi Technological University, has come in for a lot of criticism from faculty members, who on Thursday organised a protest at Metcalfe Road and asked the government to take back its decision. They said the colleges association with DU has given it the status of a Central University college, which automatically improves its reputation. If it is changed to a State University, this will be undone. Instead of changing the college into a deemed university, they want the government to set up a new institute. What is the point of renaming a college? If the government is interested in establishing a technological college, let them build their own, a teacher said. DUTA members also joined the protest. Sanjay Kumar,a DUTA member, said DCE is among the top 20 engineering colleges in India due to its Central University college status. This move will adversely impact all alumni and new students, he said. A faculty member said the conversion of the college militates against the fundamental philosophy of the Professor Yashpal Committee recommendations. Instead of separate specialised universities,a state should have one university that is multi-disciplinary in nature,he said. DCE faculty and DUTA jointly submitted the demands to the chief minister.
