A 28-year-old Dalit man was allegedly kidnapped and beaten up by five men, purportedly for not casting a vote in favour of the accused in Sarpanch polls, in Bilaspur’s Rathiwas village Sunday, police said. The man has alleged that the accused used caste-based slurs against him and threatened to kill him.

An FIR under SC/ST Atrocities Prevention Act among other IPC sections, along with the Arms Act, was registered on Monday. The five accused are absconding and efforts are on to arrest them, police said.

According to the complaint, the victim was sitting near the Hanuman Mandir around 10.15 pm on Sunday when one Manish Singh and his cousin approached him.

“They told me the man who had contested in Panchayat polls, Sanjit Rathi, was asking for me and took me to his house. I was taken inside the house and beaten up by Rathi, his friends… with lathi sticks. Later, they hurled casteist abuses at me and said they would kill me. A man pointed his pistol to my head and said he would kill me and questioned me about why I didn’t vote for Rathi in the polls. Upon knowing that I was being held at Rathi’s home, my parents requested them to let go of me. Later, I was admitted to a hospital in Bilaspur,” said the complainant.

Police said that the victim has been brought home and the family has been asked to inform them if they face any further threats or any other issues. “The victim and the accused were from the same village and the incident was over polls held last year,” police said. An officer said that the victim’s body had multiple marks from being beaten with sticks.

The complainant alleged that he was kidnapped, thrashed and threatened with death by the five accused because of his caste. He further claimed that his family was also at risk.

An FIR was registered at Bilaspur police station under IPC sections 148, 149, 323, 342, 365, 506, Arms act 25 (1-B a) and SC/ST act 3(1)(R).
