The Delhi Universitys standing committee of academic council met on Sunday to look at the four-year course curriculum for subjects like history and sociology. While the main discipline papers of these two subjects were given approval, the curricula for minor discipline papers of history were sent back to the department for re-consideration,a committee member said.
Under the new format,a student will take admission in a major discipline. While the student will take 20 papers of the main discipline,he/she will have to take six papers of one or two minor disciplines after one year.
The History department had put forward two sets of minor discipline (DC-II) papers one in Indian history and the other offering a mix of world history and cultural history. Other departments have provided only one set of DC-II papers. According to the history department, the reason behind presenting two sets of DC-II papers was to address different interests of students and to take into consideration the workload and expertise of college teachers.
Member of standing committee said while the DC-II courses have been sent to the history department, questions were also raised on a paper where A K Ramanujans essays were listed as readings.
Both sociology and mathematics offered options within the main discipline papers. The committee has asked the departments to either merge theses optional papers or choose one of them.
The curricula of home science also received a go-ahead in the standing committee meeting.
The academic council is expected to meet on Monday to deliberate on the syllabi of these subjects.
