Councillors suspect loss of power after MCD split, plan to give municipal polls a miss

Many MCD councillors have decided to skip the upcoming municipal polls in the wake of analytical discussions on the power that MLAs and councillors would enjoy after MCD is trifurcated.

Many MCD councillors have decided to skip the upcoming municipal polls in the wake of analytical discussions on the power that MLAs and councillors would enjoy after MCD is trifurcated. They are now hoping to skip straight to contesting for a seat in the Assembly.

“I had been promised plum posts when BJP won MCD elections, rather I was made chairman of a zone. I would have still run for MCD polls, had it been of a unified MCD. After trifurcation every councillor would be more helpless than he or she is right now,as executive decisions will not favour him or her. The three corporations would have more say of MLAs and other representatives,” said a councillor.

Another councillor said many are considering running for the Assembly polls and have been making rounds of the party office.

A few said trifurcation took away the charm of the municipal polls. “When director-in-chief of the local body would be the final command as far as the workings of three corporations would go,councillors would not have a free hand in taking or rejecting any decision even after being elected. Even if there is little power left for the councillors, their decisions could be delayed or hampered if it does not suit the party in power,” said the councillor.

Almost five per cent of the total 272 councillors are thinking of giving the MCD polls a miss.
