Constable attacked for security check on car

Police said Dharamveer was rushed to hospital and is now stable.

Youths attacked a constable in Northeast Delhi’s Seelampur area on the night of Sunday and Monday when the policeman flagged down their car for a check.

Police said constable Dharamveer (40) was manning a picket on a road in Seelampur when a Swift DZire approached him. Since security has been heightened ahead of Republic Day, he stopped the car. While he was checking the car, the constable and the three youth in the car got into an argument.

After the check, the youths drove off, but returned to the picket after 45 minutes. Police said this time they were armed with rods and sticks. They and attacked Dharamveer, reigning blows on his head. A home guard who was at the scene was attacked too when he tried to intervene.

Police said Dharamveer was rushed to hospital and is now stable. He was discharged a few hours later, police said.

A senior police officer said, “We have registered a case under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 335 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt on provocation) of the IPC. The three are absconding but we have identified them on them basis of Dharamveer’s statement.”
