Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva Monday said the party is ready to contest elections in Delhi as early as October. Challenging the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), he said: “They want elections in November, but why wait that long? Conduct it in October, the BJP is ready,” he said.
This comes a day after Arvind Kejriwal said he would step down as the Chief Minister of Delhi and called for early polls, alongside Maharashtra which is expected to go to polls in November. The Delhi Assembly elections are due in February next year.
Asked about the potential CM candidate after Kejriwal’s resignation, Sachdeva told The Indian Express, “Ek bhrashtachari jayega aur dusra aayega. (A corrupt person will go and another will come) He (Kejriwal) should have resigned six months ago but he decided to waste the time of the Delhi public.”
The leader also spoke about the BJP’s strategy against the new CM face of AAP, “which will consist of exposing their corruption and failures during their tenure in the state”.
Taking a dig at Kejriwal, he alleged, “The CM says he is going for ‘Agnipariksha (trial by fire)’ whereas he lives in a ‘castle’ which costs crores. Let me bring him to the homes of the poor and show him what Agnipariksha really means. There are high chances that he will vacate his residence in Civil Lines within 15 days to earn sympathy from voters during the coming elections.”
Announcing his resignation in an address to AAP workers on Sunday, Kejriwal had likened his decision to Sita’s agnipariksha in the Ramayana and said: “Inhone mere upar aarop lagaya hai. Jab Bhagwaan Ram vanvas se aaye the, Sita maiyaa ko agnipariksha deni padi. Aaj mai agnipariksha dene ja raha hoon (They have levelled allegations against me. When Lord Ram returned from exile, Sita had to undergo a trial by fire. Today, I am going for a trial by fire).”
