Now that driving licences (DLs) are available in the form of chip-based smart cards, the Delhi Transport Department will soon have a centralised database of all DLs issued so far. This would enable licence holders to renew their DLs from any of the 13 regional transport offices (RTOs) in the Capital, and not just the one in their area of residence.
Though a bit delayed, the process of centralisation of DLs is finally on,and would be completed by the end of this month.
Transport Department officials said that though data has so far remained scattered across different RTOs,the centralisation of information on DLs would make it easy for one to renew and make changes in driving licences from any of the RTOs in the city. The scheme also entails issuance of fresh licences from any of the RTOs.
The Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) has put in place all the required records in one common database, and developed technology for multiple access points of information. All existing data from the 13 RTOs and the Burari unit have been compiled and updated by the DIMTS.
Principal Secretary-cum-Transport Commissioner RK Verma told Newsline,The system will consolidate information and ensure convenience for licence holders. Why should we stay localised at a time when information can be accessed from any point?
With the new system in place, one can renew licences from any of the RTOs. Trials are on to access information from different locations through the centralised database and, though there were glitches as some of the old data had to be updated,it has now been put in place. The system sees a transition from the old paper-based and card-based licences to the new chip-based smart card ones, he added.
The new chip-based smart cards have the applicants fingerprint as well as related visual information. They can be updated with records of past traffic offences and if the traffic police personnel has a card reader, the information can be accessed on the spot.
