The numbers are growing at the India Art Summit ,now called the India Art Fair

Do you want to gain a deeper understanding of fine art? Join the Collectors Programme of the India Art Fair

The numbers are growing at the India Art Summit (IAS),now called the India Art Fair (IAF). While this year,IAS had 84 galleries participating, there will be over 100 galleries at the next edition in January 2012; the floor space, too, has risen from 8,000 sq meters in 2010 to 13,500 square meters. Clearly, the IAF is bracing for an influx of art lovers, including amateurs. “The India Art Fair is starting a Collectors Programme,a year-long,sustained art programme that would create better understanding of art among the new collectors. The Collectors Programme is the outcome of the feedback we have received from participating galleries at the summit during the past few years,” says Neha Kirpal, founder and director,IAF,adding that the thrust of the Programme this year will be South Asian and diaspora artists, which is the focus of the next edition of the art fair.

The Collectors Programme is a membership-based initiative, wherein members can attend art talks, have guided tours to artists’ studios, and receive a

fortnightly email about art-related developments from across the world, and information about the art market. A yearly membership costs Rs 7,000.

The Programme has been created after studying similar initiatives in museums across the world. “Our aim is to enroll the maximum number of members in order to create a more informed collector base in India,” says Kirpal, adding that members will also have interactions with serious collectors and prestigious institutions.

There is another bonus for members — they can reserve a seat at the Speakers’ Forum, where specialised discussions about art are held during the art fair. “In a first, each session of the Speakers’ Forum will be curated by a prestigious art institution like Tate Modern and the Board for Art,” says Kirpal.
