Rush to register names on voters’ list as EC extends date

New Delhi: Over two lakh people in the city have applied for registration as voters since last month with 50,000 applications being filed in the last week alone,Election Commission (EC) officials said on Wednesday. The EC had on September 9 finalised the voters’ list for the December 4 polls. However,in view of the overwhelming rush to register names on the voters’ list,it has now decided to accept fresh applications until November 6. The Delhi EC officials held a meeting with booth level officers and directed them to conduct door-to-door surveys and speed up the verification process for voters’ enrolment.

Man gets 7 years in jail for raping domestic help

New Delhi: A Delhi court sentenced a 23-year-old man to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a domestic help in a house where he too was working as a help. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 3,000 on Pramod,a native of Madhubani in Bihar,after holding him guilty of raping the woman in October 2010.

50-year-old man gets life term for murder

New Delhi: A Delhi court has sentenced a 50-year-old man to life imprisonment for killing a man by smashing his head with a brick. Additional Sessions Judge Sanjay Garg awarded the jail term to Mohd Abid who was found guilty of murdering Mohd Iliyas. According to prosecution,on April 3,2010,Abid and Iliyas got into a fight over money. Abid hit Iliyas on his head with a brick several times,police said. Iliyas was rushed to hospital where he was declared brought dead.
