Support for the wrestlers’ protest at Jantar Mantar poured in from different corners on Sunday.

Among those at the site during the day was Satyendra Kumar, a national-level wrestler from Gorakhpur. He said he comes to the protest site every day. “I come to support my wrestler sisters and brothers. It is very shameful that the government, despite several complaints and protests for the last 15 days, is not taking any action against Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Singh. We will sit here and fight till he is arrested.”

From Punjab, 70-year-old Amarjeet Kaur, who is a farmer, said, “This is a matter of the safety of our daughters. After years, women finally have freedom and a chance to fulfil their dreams. We parents send our daughters to schools and colleges, hoping that they will be safe. On the one hand, there is talk of ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’, but when it comes to the safety of our daughters, there is no action. These girls (wrestlers) have made the country proud on an international level… We will not leave until the government acts against Singh.”

Another elderly woman, Harkirat, added, “This fight is not only about the wrestling academy. If there is no action taken here, then atrocities against women in every institution will continue. This fight is not only for one woman or two; it is a fight for the safety and dignity of the daughters of the entire country.”

Sandeep Dhange, a PhD candidate and a kabaddi player, said police should co-operate and take action. “This issue is not only in sports, it is everywhere, be it at a workplace or an educational institution. These women (wrestlers) have shown courage by coming forward,” he added.
