A Class XII student of Rotary Public School in Gurgaon was found dead in the school’s washroom on Thursday afternoon. Police said the body of the girl was found hanging from the exhaust fan in the washroom, located on the second floor of the school. Police said it appeared the girl hung herself after slashing both her wrists.

“She climbed on to the toilet seat and hung herself from the grill attached to the exhaust fan. She had also used the shard of a broken tile to slash her wrists,” Rajesh Kumar, ACP (Crime), said.

According to police, the girl was chided by her teacher for texting a “friend” during class and was taken to the vice-principal, who told her that her parents would be informed. “Scared of how her parents would react, she reportedly tried pleading with the vice-principal not to inform them. But when she did not relent, the girl decided to end her life,” Kumar said.

School principal Gulshan Dewan said, “She pleaded with the vice-principal to just confiscate her phone and not inform her parents. She was told to return to her class for the final session. During class, she requested her teacher for a bathroom break. When she did not return, the teacher asked one of the helps to check on her.”

The help repeatedly knocked on the locked cubicle, and when there was no response, she tried peeking over the door and saw the girl’s head, the principal said.   “She alerted the teacher, who along with the vice-principal, rushed to washroom and broke open the door. They found the girl dead and informed me,” Dewan said.

The principal said the vice-principal had informed her parents about her texting in class and had asked them to come to school. Dewan said last year, a boy had come to visit the girl at school. “They became friends on Facebook. When he came to meet her last year, we had alerted her parents and they had said they would take care of it,” she said.

According to school authorities, the girl was an above-average student. In a statement to police on Thursday night, the girl’s parents alleged that a boy, who she was friends with, had been harassing her and this drove her to end her life. “They also said they were not aware that their daughter was carrying a mobile phone with her to school,” Kumar said. A case for abetment to suicide has been registered at Palam Vihar Police station.
