CBSE issues guidelines for admission to Class XI

While most schools that have up to Class XII have already given provisional admission to students in Class XI,students of schools that have only up to Class X are the ones seeking answers. Earlier marks and percentages were necessary to decide the streams a student could opt for. This year onwards,grades and grade points have replaced marks,heightening confusion.

“Schools affiliated to the Board follow different practices suitable to them. They may continue to do so. In view of the demand by a number of schools,however,illustrative guidelines have been issued for deciding the combination of subjects in Class XI,” said a CBSE official.

This year,students have received Cumulative Grade Point Averages (CGPA) in their “statement of subject-wise performance” and can calculate their indicative percentages by multiplying the CGPA with 9.5.

“Admission can be based on the CGPA (overall indicative percentage of marks) and subject-wise Grade Point (subject-wise indicative percentage of marks),” the official added. “In case of a tie in CGPA between two candidates,the inter-se merit of such candidates may be determined in order of preference based on subject-wise GP.” The CBSE has,however,pointed out that this method is only “illustrative”.

This year onwards,a student’s performance has been assessed using the conventional method of numerical marking and grades have been awarded to indicate subject-wise performance. Also the practice of using terms like “compartment” and “fail” has been discontinued. The overall result in the “Statement of Subject-wise Performance” is shown either as “Eligible for Qualifying Certificate” or “Eligible for Improvement of Performance”.

Science
Candidates obtaining a higher CGPA in one compulsory language (better of English/Hindi),Mathematics and Science to be considered.

Commerce
With Mathematics: Candidates obtaining a higher CGPA in one compulsory language (better of English/Hindi),Mathematics and Science/Social Science should be considered.

Without Mathematics: Candidates obtaining a higher CGPA in one compulsory language (better of English/ Hindi),Science and Social Science should be considered.

Humanities
Candidates with a higher CGPA in one compulsory language (better of English/Hindi),Social Science and a second language to be given preference.
