The collective excitement of nearly 9,000 participants of the Delhi Half Marathon easily defeated the slight winter chill of the clear Sunday morning.
As the Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi flagged of the event at Central Secretariet,Vinay Marg,in the presence of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Minister of State for Sport P P Patil, the anticipation of the 21-kilometre run was palpable among the participants.
Olympian Deriba Merga from Ethiopia successfully defended the title he won last year, and the reigning world champion Mary Keitany from Kenya won the womens title.
The half marathon brought together people from all walks of life, age groups and backing various causes close to their hearts. Sunny Wadhwa,a 20-year-old student, ran with his friends as part of Shiamak Davars Victory Arts Foundation. It was fantastic and energy-sapping at the same time, he said. But I feel satisfied that Im able to help someone.
Actor Rahul Bose, who was also present at the event, shared Wadhwas views. Through this concept, you are also helping deprived and disadvantaged people of the society in a novel way, he said.
The event tested the determination and endurance levels of most participants. Many, like 26-year-old IT professional Sumit Singh, gave up before the finishing line. I tried my best to make it till the end,but my body just did not agree. I will try and be in better physical shape before next years event, he said.
For 58-year-old farmer Ravinder Singh, who had come from Baghpat, the run required only half his effort. This is not really physically strenuous. You just have to run, said Singh.
Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, who met the participants at the finishing line, said he was not fit enough to participate. I have never participated in a marathon, but I would definitely love to do so. He also expressed his desire to perform at next years Commonwealth Games. I would really love to perform at the opening ceremony at Jawaharlal Nehru stadium. It really sounds great.
Though the run was conducted smoothly, many questioned the arrangements to manage litter. The park near the Ashoka Hotel, which served as the end point, was a sea of empty snack packets distributed by the organisers. There were few dustbins, said Sibi Arasu,a participant.
