While the public transport system in the Capital undergoes a major overhaul,road transport continues to be a challenge for the Delhi government. Newsline takes a look at the changes taking over the city,with low-floor buses replacing the rickety old DTC and Blueline buses.
* 656 is the total number of low-floor buses in the Capital at present. Out of these,631 are green non-AC ones and 25 are red AC ones.
* 2,500 new low floor buses are expected to hit the city roads by February 2010.
* 1,500 will be non-AC and 1,000 buses will be AC buses.
* Total cost of the 1,500 buses expected to hit the city is Rs 765 crore under the JNNURM Scheme. The Centre is expected to pitch in Rs 267.75 crore as 33 per cent criteria share. Rs 115.52 crore has already been released during 2008-09.
* 30 is the highest number of low-floor buses on a single route route no 423,which spans the BRT corridor through Old Delhi Railway Station and Ambedkar Nagar Terminal.
* There are 23 low-floor buses running in the NCR region.
* Till 2003,buses constituted about 1 per cent of vehicles in the city but catered to 60 per cent of passenger traffic.
* The total DTC fleet in 2007-08 is 3,537 compared to 2,682 in 1997.
* Passengers travelling on DTC buses daily are 24.04 lakh. Rs 3,417 is the average daily earning.
* Total bus routes operational in the city: 352
* 17 clusters comprising of 657 bus routes have been formed to replace the existing Blueline operators with cooperatives or corporates. One cluster of 30 bus routes has been awarded already.
