Campaigning for 2010 Games: Cycle rally kicks off in city

The Delhi government kickstarted their awareness campaign on Sunday for the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2010.

The Delhi government kickstarted their awareness campaign on Sunday for the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2010 .

More than 200 students from 15 technical institutions across the Capital participated in the 15-km long cycle rally.

The rally is part of the campaign to generate interest among Delhiites about the Games.

The cycle rally started and culminated at Raj Ghat,covered Ajmeri Gate,Paharganj,Rani Jhansi Marg,Old Barafkhana,Tis Hazari,ISBT,Mori Gate,GPO,Red Fort.

“The cycle rally is a step towards spreading awareness about Commonwealth Games. The rally conforms to the objective of the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 – to encourage sports development,physical recreation and promote integrity,fair play competence,team work,commitment to excellence and respect for gender equality and tolerance,” Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said.

The Delhi government had earlier drawn up a programme for 30,000 students of Delhi government schools to help them learn about Commonwealth Games.

A senior official of the Games Organising Committee said: “We realised that most of the students who were applying for the volunteer programme did not know anything about the Commonwealth Games.”

The Directorate of Education launched a programme in August to promote speaking in English and creative thinking.

The students are also being taught about the various Commonwealth countries as well as interacting with foreigners.
