Two workers died while another was left critically injured after a two-storey building collapsed on them in Northeast Delhi’s Welcome a little after midnight on Thursday, officers said. Police said the three men were working in a jeans factory that operated from the ground floor. According to DCP (Northeast) Joy Tirkey, they received a PCR call at 2.16 am. “The first floor was vacant while the ground floor was being used for cutting jeans. three workers were trapped under the debris.Two men were declared dead at GTB Hospital.” The owner of the building and factory has been identified as Shahid, the DCP said. The victims were identified as Arshad, 30, and Tauhid, 20. The injured man, Rehan, 22, is undergoing treatment. An officer said the first floor of the building was under construction after the landlord decided to carry out renovation work. “A lot of the construction material was kept on the first floor,” said the officer. A case under IPC section pertaining to causing death by negligence has been lodged and raids are ongoing to arrest the owner. Speaking to The Indian Express, Rehan’s father Fardeed Ahmad said, “My son received major head and foot injuries. he recently started working at the factory and was paid around Rs 7,000 for stitching clothes.” The MCD said in a statement, “As per our information received, the building was 40 years old and its owner was bringing it down due to his personal reasons. because of which it collapsed.”
