Brother of man who warned Kanhaiya, Khalid among two held for threat letter

The letter and a country-made pistol were recovered from a bag kept in a DTC bus Thursday.

Police arrested two persons Sunday in connection with a letter threatening to behead JNU Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar, and Umar Khalid. The letter and a country-made pistol were recovered from a bag kept in a DTC bus Thursday.

Police identified the accused as Saurabh and his friend Sulabh. Saurabh is the younger brother of Amit Jani who had warned the two students on Facebook to leave Delhi by March 31, otherwise he would get them “gunned down”. Police are looking for Jani, who claims to be national president of UP Navnirman Sena.

“The intention will be ascertained once Jani is arrested. As of now, it appears it was done to gain publicity,” said Romil Baniya, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police. Saurabh made a PCR call after keeping the bag in the bus and Sulabh was with him, said sources. Both have been booked under the Arms Act and for criminal conspiracy. ENS
