Officials looking for clues at the site of the bomb attack on the Israel Embassy Innova said they had found scraps of wet cotton cloth and glass pieces which did not appear to have come from the vehicle. Officials said these could possibly be remnants of the bomb.
No timer, battery, wires or integrated circuit were recovered from the spot. The wet cotton cloth does not belong to any of the car occupants. Nor was it inside the car. The glass pieces appear to be from a jar or test tube. Together with the wet cotton cloth,it points to a possible crude bomb. But the nature of the blast suggests it was one of high intensity and not the work of a crude bomb. The use of RDX or PETN explosives cannot be ruled out, an investigating official said.
Police seemed surprised that there was no damage to the fuel tank though the bomb was stuck on the rear of the Innova.
A metal piece also pierced Tal Yehoshua-Koren,the woman diplomat who is being treated for a spinal injury at Primus Hospital. Police said they were not sure if the metal piece was part of the car. They are waiting to examine it.
Eyewitnesses have told police that the bomb exploded barely 30 seconds after man on a motorcycle stuck the explosive on the Innova body and sped away.
There was little smoke and the car was engulfed in flames. The bomb could not have exploded without a triggering device. We are trying to figure out if a remote control was used to trigger the device, an officer said.
The two cars damaged in the explosion were towed away to the Tughlaq Road police station where they were covered with plastic sheets.
Police were looking at footage from CCTVs outside the Prime Ministers residence, the Israel Embassy and the IAF premises to get clues about the man on the motorcycle.
Police said they will also get CCTV footage from other areas in New Delhi. Security personnel deployed at the houses of VIPs,politicians on that road stretch were being questioned for details.
Police said the traffic signal was still red when the incident took place and the motorcyclist could have taken a left towards Safdarjung Road as an escape route.
The attacker must have crossed three PCR vans deployed on the stretch and a police station before he stuck the explosives on the rear side of the car, an officer said.
