An injured black kite was found at National Security Advisor Ajit Doval’s residence on Saturday and was later rescued.

It was discovered collapsed on the floor of the security control room. The security personnel at Doval’s residence were quick to contact Wildlife SOS, a conservation non-profit organisation based in New Delhi, which enabled a swift rescue. The staff also took steps to protect the bird by securing it in a box until the team arrived, as per the members of Wildlife SOS.

According to the NGO, it conducted a veterinary examination of the bird and treated it for wing injuries. The black kite belongs to a species protected under Schedule II of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.

After treatment, the bird was placed under observation to monitor recovery and released upon regaining strength. According to the rescue team, this was made possible through nutritional support.

Geeta Seshamani, co-founder and secretary of Wildlife SOS, said, “The quick response from the security staff was instrumental in saving this bird’s life. Our team works tirelessly to rescue and rehabilitate distressed wildlife, fostering coexistence between citizens and native species of wild animals.”

“Birds of prey like black kites often face injuries due to collisions with buildings and man-made hazards. Timely intervention is crucial to ensuring their survival,” said Kartick Satyanarayan, co-founder and CEO of Wildlife SOS.

As per wildlife experts, it is common for the birds to be affected by heatwaves, which proves fatal, as they are prone to dizziness and strokes during the summer months commencing in March, especially in Delhi-NCR.
