Following a visit by party leaders to an MCD school in Kapashera Tuesday, the Delhi BJP alleged that it found severe neglect and poor conditions. It claimed hundreds of students were forced to sit on jute mats, with three different classes being held in a single hall, and highlighted a lack of basic facilities.
“Delhi constantly hears from Minister Atishi and MLA Manish Sisodia that they have made schools world-class. Standing in this MCD school in Kapashera today, it is disheartening to see the conditions,” said Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva.
In response to Sachdeva’s allegations, the AAP criticised the BJP, accusing it of leaving the MCD in a state of financial ruin after 15 years of rule. “The BJP is a party corrupted to the core, and under its 15-year reign, it completely bankrupted the MCD,” the AAP stated.
On the condition of the school, the BJP asserted that the taps were dry and broken, leaving students without access to drinking water. It also pointed out that the school’s toilet block is extremely dirty, with no separate facilities for the approximately 550 female students.
Despite having an enrollment of 1,250 students, the school has been without a principal since 2022. Additionally, the school is severely understaffed, with seven teachers on BLO duty and six on long leave. The BJP further claimed that classrooms lack proper blackboards.
“Will CM Arvind Kejriwal, who is currently in jail, and Sisodia, who is out on bail, ever consider sending their children to such schools? We will lodge a complaint with the Delhi L-G and NCPCR to ensure immediate action is taken against this treatment of children,” Sachdeva said.
He added that they will also take the issue to the Delhi Mayor so improvements can be made.
Hitting back, the AAP condemned the BJP for closing over 60,000 schools across the country in the past two years. “The situation is so dire that even PM Narendra Modi had to resort to getting photos clicked in a fake school. Shockingly, 1,606 schools in Gujarat operate with only one teacher… We are deeply grateful to the people of Delhi for entrusting us with the responsibility to improve MCD schools, and we will deliver,” it said.
