BJP MPs meet Gadkari, propose four new projects for Capital

The first project is already in the works. It was cleared by the Ridge Management Board in 2022 and granted clearance by the Supreme Court last year. It has run into trouble now with Mahipalpur residents objecting to the felling of trees.

The seven BJP MPs from Delhi met Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, on Wednesday with a memorandum proposing four new projects in the city. The meeting comes ahead of Assembly polls in the city.

The four projects include the construction of a tunnel from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Marg near the Delhi airport; connecting Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway to KMP (Kundli-Manesar-Palwal) Expressway; connecting Urban Extension Road 2 with Delhi-Dehradun Expressway and extension of Urban Extension Road 2 near Alipur.

While the tunnel will reduce the time taken to traverse the stretch from around 30 to 40 minutes to 7 to 8 minutes, a link between the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway with the KMP Expressway will help people bypass Delhi and access the airport or Gurgaon directly.

Connecting the Urban Extension Road 2 to the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway near Tronica City, the MPs told Gadkari, would also offer an alternative route for vehicles heading to Uttar Pradesh, avoiding entry into Delhi.

At a press conference after meeting Gadkari, East Delhi MP and MoS Harsh Malhotra said the idea was to reduce road congestion and thereby, the severe impact of pollution.

“…55,000 km of national highways have been constructed in the past decade. Landmark projects such as the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, nearing completion, will soon be operational, drastically cutting travel time. Similarly, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, spanning 1,250 km, will reduce travel from 36 hours to just 12 hours. Additionally, the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is already functional. Inspired by these, the MPs have suggested four new projects,” he added.
