The turbulence caused by the Bharatiya Janata Partys Tiranga Yatra to Kashmir was also felt in Delhi, when its councillors stalled the functioning of the MCDs Standing Committee on Tuesday.
Delhi BJP president Vijender Gupta, along with former party president Rajnath Singh and other supporters, took up a dharna at Rajghat on Monday evening. We will continue to be on fast until tomorrow. Whatever happens in Kashmir will decide the future course of our agitation, Gupta told Newsline.
When the MCD Standing Committee began with its meeting,BJP members waved the Tricolour and raised slogans like Bharat Mata ki jai and Kashmir hamara hain (Kashmir is ours). The sloganeering went on for about half-an-hour,until the meeting was adjourned without any agenda being taken up.
BJP councillors also came to the well of the House and shouted slogans against the Congress, accusing it of supporting a government in Jammu and Kashmir that has resorted to undemocratic practices.
In the middle of the ruckus,a condemnation resolution was passed against the stopping of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morchas Ekta Yatra at the Lakhanpur border, and the arrest of senior BJP leaders Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley.
The uproar occurred after BJYM and BJP activists, who wanted to hoist the tricolour at Lal Chowk in Srinagar on Republic Day,were stopped at the state border.
Dubbing the move as a blot on democracy,BJP councillors said it was reminiscent of the Emergency days. Accusing the state government of strengthening the stand of separatists, they said the Congress has no place to hide its face. J K Sharma, the Leader of Opposition in the MCD,told reporters that the ruling sides move of stalling the MCD meet was illogical.
