‘This has never happened before — a government using its official mechanism to curb free speech.’Both the BJP and the Congress welcomed the Supreme Court judgment staying the Delhi government circular on filing of defamation cases against media houses for publishing or broadcasting news that “damage the reputation of the Chief Minister, the council of ministers and the government”.
Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay said, “Arvind Kejriwal has brought out this draconian circular to throttle the voice of the people. We spoke out against this circular as a sign of the re-emergence of Emergency era. The Supreme Court has vindicated our stand on the issue and we demand that the Delhi government withdraw the circular and apologise to the Delhi people,” he said.
Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken similarly said that the circular wasn’t just an attack on the media, but also a threat to “any kind of political adversity or opposition”.

“This has never happened before — a government using its official mechanism to curb free speech. The director of prosecution and the public prosecutor, who would take the call on cases of defamation, are appointed by the law minister — against whom there is an ongoing case of a forged degree. The conflict of interest is shocking,” he said.
Congress spokesperson Sharmistha Mukherjee said, “The Fourth Estate is an important pillar of democracy. By trying to browbeat media or anyone who dares speak against them, the AAP government is dishonoring the fundamental principles of democracy. Why should public money be used to ‘uphold’ the reputation of Kejriwal and his colleagues?”
