There’s nothing fashion loves more than a good comeback story. Tossing his head, taking a flamboyant dip in the pool and flirting with the camera,Rohit Bal seemed the ultimate designer on Wednesday at Aman Resorts at Lodhi Road. A fawning group of celebrities-clients,crowded the poolside and watched the post-surgery Bal put on a big show that was part of the Pearls Infrastructure Delhi Couture week. Predictably it will be the talk of the town for the next couple of months.
Striding down the 50 metres pristine white poolside runway ,under the soft spotlights enhancing the drama of swooshing gowns,Bals proud, elegant womena bevy of coltish models trussed in white, switched from femininity to nobility, abandoning the velvets in favour of textured surfaces and building the collection on extreme silhouettes, structural lines and an overall sense of fantasy. However, the collection The Colours of Ash was more than that. The title is symbolic, for me it is about rising from the ashes. It is a big show after my illness, smiled Bal dressed in white.
The look morphed on the runway to tout patterned jackets paired with dhoti pants for men. There were tasseled jackets paired with cigarette pants as well, followed by flower-themed structural pieces. Mumbai-based model Lisa Haydons red structural puffed out dresses won applause from the swish set that comprised of Ayesha Thapar,Feroze Gujral and the Sachdev sisters Charu and Priya. The latter looked stunning in slim pants and a backless black blouse. But what made the collection high-octane and very couture was the last minute slid into the pool six models kitted in white vintage laced gowns stepped in one-by-one,joined by Bal later. The show got its vote of confidence the crowd gave Bal a standing ovation. Designer Rohit Gandhi declared the show fabulous while JJ Valaya called him the life of the show. The added drama was the cheery on the icing, agreed Bal. You need to bring in the other elements to make it a success, but there must be a balance, he added. The only hitch in an otherwise perfect evening was the presence of policemen at the venue. The police permission didnt bother me,it killed me. The models were ready two hours before the show. Thankfully the issue was sorted, said Bal.
