At 44.5 degrees, Saturday is season’s hottest

With the temperature soaring five degrees above normal, the capital witnessed the hottest day of the season at 44.5 degree Celsius on Saturday. However, residents of Delhi can expect some respite from the heat on Sunday with the Met department predicting dust storms and thunderstorms across the city.

As the heat wave continued to sweep the capital, mercury at the Palam weather station settled at 46.2 degree Celsius. Met officials said that the minimum temperature settled at 29.3 degree Celsius, three notches above the season’s average.

Weatherman had predicted thunderstorms for Sunday. “The clear is likely yo turn partly cloudy by Sunday. Dust storms and thunderstorms could occur in some parts of the city on Sunday,” the Met forecast said.

“The maximum and minimum temperature is expected to be around 45 and 29 degree Celsius, respectively,” a Met official said.

The heat brought down the humidity levels which stayed between 40 and 17 per cent.

With the capital on the boil, Delhi Fire Services has been put on alert. Fire officials said they received over 100 calls on Friday reporting incidents of fires. “We did not receive any calls of major fires. We will be able to collate the total number of calls only after 12 am,” a PCR official said.
