As stalemate continues, meat prices start rising

As the stalemate between meat associations and the MCD continues, prices of meat have slowly started to rise across the Capital’s meat shops.

As the stalemate between meat associations and the MCD continues, prices of meat have slowly started to rise across the Capital’s meat shops.

The worst affected are mutton prices, which have risen as high as Rs 300,while chicken prices have touched Rs 150. The problem is being partly contained by suppliers procuring meat from Faridabad and Ghaziabad. “Suppliers are having a tough time making up for the shortage by going to outside centres,” said Rahul Sonkar of Noida’s Punjab Meat Shop.

On the other hand, illegal slaughtering continues as meat associations refuse to move to Ghazipur.

Restaurants have been largely untouched by the crisis,as most annual contracts with suppliers. “We are facing no problem,as it is the supplier’s headache to get us meat as per the contract,” said Yashpal Wadhwa, manager at Pindi in Pandara Road. Also, the demand for mutton is not that high,he said.

Much depends on the CM’s response to the crisis,as meat associations plan to meet again on Monday to plan the future course of action.

“We have conducted ourselves in a peaceful manner, but the government must take us seriously,” said Sirajuddin Qureshi, president,India

Islamic Centre.
