Lovely played crucial role in formation of AAP-Congress alliance in Delhi, don’t know why he is citing it for resigning: Sanjay Singh
Arvinder Singh Lovely wrote in his resignation letter that the Delhi Congress unit was opposed to forming an alliance with the AAP for Lok Sabha elections 2024.

A day after Arvinder Singh Lovely resigned as the Delhi Congress chief citing the party’s tie-up with Aam Aadmi Party for Lok Sabha elections 2024 as one of the reasons, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh on Monday said Lovely himself played a crucial role in the formation of the alliance between the two parties in the capital and thanked him for his efforts.
“I am not going to lie… One should not judge the good or bad of any person, even in front of the camera… But with full responsibility, I will say this that Lovely ji played an important role in reaching a compromise and formation of an alliance between the AAP and Congress in Delhi,” said Sanjay Singh, adding that he did not know why Lovely was citing the alliance for stepping down.
Lovely wrote in his resignation letter that the Delhi Congress unit was opposed to forming an alliance with a party created solely to bring false, fabricated, and malicious corruption charges against the Congress. Almost half of the AAP’s cabinet ministers are in prison on corruption charges, and despite this, the Congress formed an alliance with the AAP in Delhi, he added.
Lovely also said despite his political differences, he visited Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in his residence on the night of his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the liquor policy case, along with two other leaders, Subash Chopra and Sandeep Dikshit.
“I will thank him (Lovely) because he is the first Opposition leader to arrive outside CM Arvind Kejriwal’s residence during his arrest… I thank him for his key role in the AAP-Congress alliance. He must only know the reason (for resigning in the name of alliance with the AAP). I don’t know…”
However, when asked Singh if Lovely’s resignation would affect the INDIA bloc in Delhi in the Lok Sabha elections, Sanjay Singh said, “It is an internal matter of the Congress and the senior leaders of the Congress will pay attention to it.”
“I read that Congress national chief Mallikarjun Kharge has given this responsibility to the senior leaders of the Congress who will find a solution,” said Sanjay Singh, adding that the Lok Sabha polls are about the people and democracy and the INDIA bloc would win all seven seats in Delhi.
As part of seat-sharing arrangements within the INDIA bloc, the AAP is contesting Lok Sabha elections from four of these seats: East Delhi, West Delhi, South Delhi, and New Delhi. The Congress is contesting from the other three seats: Chandini Chowk, North West Delhi, and North East Delhi.
Lovely expressed dissatisfaction in his letter regarding the party’s choice of candidates: Former JNU student union leader Kanhaiya Kumar from North East Delhi and former MP Udit Raj from North West Delhi.
All seven seats in Delhi will go to polls on May 25 in the sixth and penultimate phase of Lok Sabha elections 2024. The results will be released as part of the nationwide counting on June 4.
