(Express photo by Amit Mehra)With Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal walking out of Tihar Jail, hours after he was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court in the excise policy case, leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were quick to remind people that “even criminals are allowed parole” and it does not mean the CM is guilt-free”.
In a statement, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said the top court has “clearly cautioned that during interim bail, Kejriwal will neither go to the CM office nor the Delhi Secretariat. It means that the Supreme Court has also accepted that CM Kejriwal has not been acquitted, he has only been granted interim bail for election purposes”.
“Criminals are sometimes allowed parole… we welcome the Honourable court’s verdict. Interim bail doesn’t mean that you have been absolved of the charges. The charge is still the same — fraud of over Rs 100 crore has taken place in the garb of the excise policy of which Kejriwal is the kingpin,” he added.
He also emphasised that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has no local issues for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls because “the state government has done nothing in the last 10 years except to create a stir in the name of the CM being jailed”.
Echoing this, BJP candidate from the South Delhi Lok Sabha seat, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, said, “AAP leaders are promoting it as if Kejriwal has been acquitted or cleared by the Supreme Court… He has only been released on interim bail for 20 days for election campaigning… and will have to return to jail on June 2.”
“In the eyes of the Supreme Court, Kejriwal is an accused, hence, several conditions have been imposed on him. He cannot operate as the Chief Minister or sign any files. He is prohibited from viewing any files related to the liquor policy and from visiting the Chief Minister’s office, i.e., the Secretariat. There is also a ban on him talking to any witnesses of the liquor scam. Even discussing his role in the scam is not allowed. Amongst these numerous restrictions, he has only been allowed to participate in election campaigning,” Bidhuri added.
Delhi BJP Spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor said AAP’s ‘Jail ka badle vote campaign’ has lost steam.
“AAP leaders should remember that Kejriwal would go back to jail on June 2… Satyendar Jain, who also got bail on medical grounds, had to ultimately go back to jail. Similarly, they should not forget that their other leader, Manish Sisodia, was denied bail yesterday,” he added.
