A 23-year-old woman,Asha,succumbed to her injuries on Sunday after she set herself on fire late on Saturday evening. Her husband,Jyoti Kumar,27,ended his life soon after his wife was declared dead. The police arrested Kumar’s mother and sister after Asha’s family alleged that she was harassed for dowry. “Preliminary inquiries suggest that the husband consumed some poisonous substance. A case has been registered and the matter is being investigated,” said a senior police officer at the Hapur (Rural) police station.

Auto unions protest

In response to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s statement about phasing out auto-rickshaws from the city’s road,seven auto-rickshaw unions have threatened to go on strike from April 1. They have also planned a protest meet at the Anand vihar terminal on Monday morning. Kishan Verma,who heads the Federation of All Delhi Autos and Taxis,said: “We want the CM to apologise for the statement and extend the deadline of March 31 for issuing smart cards to auto-rickshaw drivers.”
