Losses suffered in IPL betting and amount of money spent on his girlfriend drove a history sheeter to take to criminal activities again. The Lodhi Colony police of South Delhi on Wednesday,arrested the 23-year-old and his acquaintance for their alleged involvement in several burglary cases in trans-Yamuna areas. Four passports,among other valuables,were recovered from their possession.Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) HGS Dhaliwal said that Praveen Kumar and Abhimanyu alias Biru,were apprehended from Lodhi Colony. During interrogation,the DCP claimed that Kumar had earlier been involved in around 10 cases of auto theft and credit card cheatings. In the recently concluded IPL matches he suffered a loss of Rs 3 lakh. He also got married to his girlfriend in a temple without the knowledge of their parents. “After marriage the two shifted in a rented flat and Praveen had to spent a lot to meet everyday expenditures. This drove him to involve himself in criminal activities,” said the DCP.

Three from city die in Kurukshetra
Chandigarh: Three persons died and four were critically injured when their Qualis collided with a stationary mini-truck on the Chandigarh-Delhi National Highway near Partapgarh village in Kurukshetra on Wednesday. The victims,from Uttam Nagar in Delhi,were on their way back from the Vaishno Devi Temple. The dead persons have been identified as Jaipal,Amit and Tarun Singla.

Man booked for senior citizen’s death
The police have registered a case under Section 304 (culpable homicide) against a person for pushing a senior citizen to death during a fight between two neighbouring families on May 20. According to the police,the fight erupted on May 20 when Kushabhi Lal’s family’s mini-truck was parked in front of Yashpal Singh’s house in Madhu Vihar,East Delhi. Kushabhi Lal’s son removed the truck,but Singh reportedly pushed Lal,said a police officer. He was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Sales tax officer being probed for graft
NOIDA: The Noida police are questioning an assistant commissioner of Sales Tax following a complaint that he had sought a bribe of Rs 5,000 to clear a truck bring in beer from Navi Mumbai. Transporter Somesh Kumar said during checking of papers at the Kalindi checkpost,Assistant Commissioner Jhokha Ram refused to clear the truck and asked the driver to come to the Botanical Garden with Rs 5,000.

Chowki in-charge suspended
Ghaziabad: A chowki in-charge,Anant Dev Mishra,has been suspended by the Ghaziabad police chief after complaints that he was not performing his duties in cases of missing persons.

Three in police net for drug trafficking
Three persons,including a Nigerian,were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly trafficking 9.5 kg of Ephedrine,a stimulant,to African countries. The arrested were identified as Chijioke Smith Okpe (29) from Nigeria,Marina (22) from Mizoram and Akhil Dass (44),of Adarsh Nagar. The arrests followed a tip-off that Smith was procuring Ephedrine through his associates and couriering it to Africa.

Former IIT staffer held for thefts on campus
The South District police has arrested a thief,Mukesh Kumar (30) and recovered three laptops. On interrogation,it was revealed that Mukesh had been working as a Class IV employee on a temporary basis at the IIT campus. Later,he quit his job and started stealing valuables from the hostels. As the students were familiar with him,nobody could doubt or check his activities.
