Heroin seized
An Afghan national was arrested by South Delhi police for allegedly swallowing the drug packets he was carrying to escape security check at the IGI Airport. The accused,his identity has not been revealed,came to a nursing home for an operation last week to have the packets removed,police said. The doctors called up the police after the packets were found to be containing heroin. The heroin (in three packets) is of acute fine quality and has been seized, a police officer said. A case has been registered against him at the Saket police station.
Man hit by bike,dies
A 52-year-old man was killed after being hit by a speeding motorcycle in Pul Prahladpur in Southeast Delhi on Wednesday afternoon. The victim,identified as Girdhari Lal,a native of Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh,was walking on the road when the bike hit him from behind. Lal suffered severe head injuries. He was rushed to hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival, said a police official. The motorcycle driver,identified as Sultan,has been arrested and a case registered against him,police said.
NOIDA: A security guard posted at a factory in Noida beat up a man to death following an argument. Police officials said Rajesh Mishra suspected the victim,identified as Uday Veer,tried to frighten him during his night duty. On Wednesday,an enraged Mishra hit Veer with an iron rod,police said. Veer was rushed to Fortis Hospital,where he later died, Hari Mohan Singh,station house officer,Sector 58,said. Mishra has been arrested.
Court notice to govt
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notices to the Central government and other civic agencies for violating labour laws at the construction sites for the Commonwealth Games. The court sought responses from the Centre,Delhi government,Sports Authority of India and all civic agencies concerned by February 3,taking cognizance of a petition filed by Peoples Union for Democratic Rights.
MTNL woes
Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limiteds (MTNL) customers in the New Delhi area were left in the lurch on Wednesday evening as connectivity failed in the city. Callers who tried MTNL lines were told that the lines were not available. We received a complaint around 8.30 pm. It is a routine technical problem and isolated phone lines in the Central Delhi area have been affected, said a top official of the MTNL.
