Justice Gupta retires from HC
Justice Vidya Bhusan Gupta retired from the Delhi High Court on Wednesday after a judicial career that spanned 37 years. He was given a warm send-off by colleagues and members of the Bar at a brief ceremony. Justice Gupta was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in January 2007,and made a permanent judge in September 2008. Speaking on the occasion,Justice Gupta said that his achievements have been due to the cooperation of the Bar and fellow judges. After being elevated to the Bench of this court in 2007,I am extremely grateful to my brother and sister judges as well as the Bar for making it possible for me to discharge my duties to the best of my capabilities, he said.
Petition against censorship rejected
The High Court,on Wednesday,rejected a plea by Super Cassettes Industries and other companies that films made for private screening should not require Censor Board certificates. Justice S Muralidhar rejected a bunch of petitions filed in this regard by various VCD and DVD manufacturers. He observed that such companies would have to secure the nod of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) before distributing them even for private viewing. The court order came over a bunch of 36 petitions,including those by Super Cassettes Industries,RK Movies,Max Cassettes industries,JK Electronics and Classique Discs.
Deadline extended for Paharganj lodges
The 21 guesthouses in Paharganj,which were awarded notices by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD),have been given seven more days to submit their papers. The MCD had given them notices,stating that they did not have valid licences. Though it had sealed three of the guesthouses on Tuesday,the civic agency later said that it is extending the deadline for submission of papers. Yoginder Chandolia,chairperson of the Standing Committee,said the three properties would be spared if they submit their papers within that period.
2 held for selling Merc on forged papers
Two persons,including a management graduate,were arrested on cheating charges for allegedly selling a Mercedez Benz using forged documents after getting a loan sanctioned for it,police said on Wednesday. The arrested persons have been identified as Sanjoy M Khanna,an MBA degree holder,and Devjot Singh,a graduate. The complainant,Rajiv Puri,alleged that he had bought a Mercedes Benz from Khanna on November 18,2008. Khanna had reportedly assured Puri that there was no loan amount pending on the vehicle and it was free to be sold. However,an official of Tata Capital Pvt Ltd told Puri later that he had court orders to claim the vehicle because monthly instalments were not paid.
