(Express photo by Gajendra Yadav)The Election Commission on Tuesday warned its poll machinery in the city that any partisan conduct disturbing a level playing field would be held “unpardonable”. The poll body’s fresh directions to its officials came after Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal approached the EC with concerns regarding alleged intimidation tactics being used in the city ahead of polling for the Assembly elections on Wednesday.
Following the meeting, Kejriwal stated that the EC pledged strict enforcement of the poll code of conduct to prevent any violations, ensuring free and fair election.
“We have just returned from a meeting with the Election Commission. They informed us that, normally, they do not meet anyone during the silent period, but they made an exception today. We appreciate the Election Commission for this,” he said.
“During the meeting, we highlighted several incidents of violence and gundagardi in various parts of Delhi. We explained how the Delhi Police is being misused to facilitate hooliganism. We provided multiple examples of such incidents. The Election Commission has assured us that strict action will be taken, and they will take all necessary steps to ensure free and fair elections,” he added.
The former Delhi Chief Minister said the AAP delegation had also raised concerns about “large-scale voter suppression” which may affect voters’ decision to step out and exercise their franchise.
“The Election Commission assured us that they will ensure voters feel safe and can step out to vote without fear…There is a strong apprehension that people might be bribed, threatened, or forcibly marked with black ink on their fingers to prevent them from voting tomorrow. The Election Commission has assured us that they will take appropriate action to prevent such malpractices,” he stated.
The EC said after the meeting it has reiterated its directions to its officials.
“After meeting the AAP delegation, ECI reiterates that all election officials should continue to work impartially and any partisan conduct disturbing a level playing field will be unpardonable,” it said in a post on X.
