French Ambassador Jerome Bonnafonts house became a meeting ground for various intellectual ideas on Thursday evening during the launch of celebrated French author Guy Sormans latest book titled Economics does Not Lie (Rs. 495,Full Circle Global).
The book was released by MS Swaminathan, scientist and an MP. Author Gurcharan Das,who has written the foreward of the book, was also present. As the wine and champagne kept everyone in high spirits,Bonnafont recalled a conversation with Sorman: I had a very vague idea about India when I first came here,it was Sorman who said: Make no mistake,India is great and powerful because of the peasants. He took me to a farm once and said that the farmers may not be educated but they are very rational and are capable of improving their lifestyle.
Das added,Guy is my kind of guy. He reminds us of an old fashioned idea of liberty in human life. He also read out excerpts from the foreword. Swaminathan, too, recalled his association with Sorman and said,His continuing ability and commitment towards harmonisation is what interests me.
Sorman then addressed the gathering. This book is a result of 25 years of field work and research. Almost two decades ago, people believed it was Indias destiny to be poor but I did not believe that, he said.
