Akali Dal students’ union to make debut on Delhi campus

Despite the alliance between the BJP and the SAD at the Centre and in Punjab, the student body has decided not to ally with the ABVP in the DUSU polls.

The students’ wing of SAD is yet to decide on the issues it will campaign on for the DUSU polls or its stand on the controversial CBCS.

Days after sweeping the students’ union elections of Punjab University, the Students’ Organisation of India (SOI) has decided to contest the upcoming Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections. However, the students’ wing of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is yet to decide on the issues it will campaign on for the DUSU polls or its stand on the controversial Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS).

“Apart from contesting DUSU polls, we will also contest elections in three Sikh colleges — SGTB Khalsa College, SGND Khalsa College and SGGS College of Commerce. We haven’t decided on our demands yet and I’m not quite aware of CBCS. We will compile all our demands in our manifesto on September 2,” said SOI’s Delhi unit president Gagandeep Singh.

He claimed that the SOI was already attracting potential candidates, but the final candidates will be decided by the party high command.

“Students are approaching us, but the final decision will be taken by the high command. We have tentatively decided that we will give one seat each to a woman, a Sikh candidate, a Gujjar candidate and someone from the minority community,” said Singh.

Despite the alliance between the BJP and the SAD at the Centre and in Punjab, the student organisation has decided not to ally with the BJP-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in the DUSU elections.

The SOI claimed it had the potential to do well in the DUSU election as it has been contesting independently in both Punjab and Haryana.

SOI will be the second organisation to make its debut in the DUSU elections on September 11. AAP’s students’ wing Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS) has also decided to contest the polls for the first time this year.

The entry of these organisations is likely to stir up DU’s campus politics, which usually sees a straight contest between the ABVP and Congress’ National Students’ Union of India (NSUI).
