The Delhi Police, in a joint operation with the Food Safety Department of the Delhi Government, raided an illegal ghee manufacturing unit operating in the Bawana Industrial Area, and claimed to have recovered 7,600 litres of adulterated ghee and 900 litres of oil, officials said Sunday.

Hareshwar Swami, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer-North), said the timely action averted a potential health hazard ahead of the Navratri, Dussehra, and Diwali celebrations, when the demand for ghee and sweets is high.

Swami said a team of the Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS), led by Inspector Pramod Kumar, Sub-Inspector Rohit, Assistant Sub-Inspector Narender, and head constables Jaideep and Naveen Hooda, received a tip-off regarding the adulteration of dairy products. The Food Safety Department officials were roped in, and the activities were checked at the Sai Factory located at C-51, Sector-2, Bawana Industrial Area.

“When it was confirmed that the manufacturing adulterated ghee, a raid was conducted and 7,600 litres of ‘Avtar Deshi Ghee’ and 900 litres of vanaspati and groundnut oil used in the adulteration process were seized. A case under section 318(4)/274/275 BNS was registered at Bawana police station, and all the items were seized,” Swami said.

Additionally, the police team also seized a stove, a cylinder, packaging materials, essence, colouring agents, a weighing and sealing machine, and two mixing machines.

The factory is registered in the name of Madhav Gupta, 26, a resident of Defence Colony, Delhi. Though Gupta was not present during the raid, the on-site supervisor, Brijesh, confessed that the ghee was being adulterated under the owner’s instructions.

The police said Brijesh has been arrested, and efforts are underway to arrest the absconding factory owner and trace the distribution network.
