The Tihar jail administration has deployed quick response teams (QRTs) in its high-risk prison to tackle emergency or riot-like situations, officials said.
A senior jail official said a QRT comprising prison staff, personnel of CRPF and ITBP will be deployed at jail number 8, a high-risk prison, where gangster Tillu Tajpuriya was stabbed to death allegedly by four inmates of Jitender Gogi’s gang Tuesday. “The teams will assist in emergency situations when fights break out between inmates and react quickly to separate the sparring parties…,” said an officer.
The officer said the teams have been deployed after it came to the fore during an internal inquiry that jail officials and TSP (Tamil Nadu Special Police) officers failed to separate the accused inmates and Tajpuriya in time, due to which they stabbed the latter around 90 times and even managed to attack him again while he was being carried out of the ward.
An officer said a probe is also ongoing on whether the emergency alarm system inside the high-security ward was working at the time of the incident.
Fresh footage had surfaced on Friday showing jail officials and TSP officers barely intervening even as the accused inmates kept stabbing Tajpuriya after the first attack.
Meanwhile, the four inmates have been shifted to other jails within the prison premises.
On Friday, Director General (Prisons) Sanjay Beniwal had said that based on an internal probe, action has been taken against eight Tihar Jail officials after laxity was found on their part.
