After Ranji debacle,Delhi look forward to shorter format with new tricks in the bag

If their Ranji Trophy debacle — defeats against Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, and failing to get past the group stage — was still playing on their minds,it wasn’t apparent in their body language. As the Delhi one-day team gathered at the Feroz Shah Kotla to prepare for the first game of the Vijay Hazare Trophy on February 20 against Jammu and Kashmir, the camaraderie between the players was quite evident.

But even if there are no visible signs after the break that Delhi has not had the best of seasons in the Ranji trophy, the problem areas are being identified and the will to turn things around is there. During the four-hour session on Monday, fielding which was a weak link in the Ranji trophy campaign, was paid special attention to with various drills. “The team was too defensive in the Ranji trophy,Delhi is known to play attacking cricket but that wasn’t seen in the Ranji trophy,” a member of the support staff who did not wish to be named, said.

Sanjeev Sharma, who took charge of the team after coach Manoj Prabhakar was sacked, was not able to effect much change during the tournament. “In the Ranji trophy things didn’t really go as planned, however I believe what has passed is over and I am confident that we will do well in these one day games,” Sharma said. “The one day format is a different ball-game altogether,we are confident of doing well as we have the right players and everyone is very motivated.”

Sharma is perhaps referring to the two senior players that have been added to the shorter format. The Delhi side has been bolstered by Ashish Nehra and Ishant Sharma who will be turning out. “Ishant and Ashish bhai playing for Delhi is a very good thing, they bring a lot of international experience to our side and both of them are quality bowlers,” opener Shikhar Dhawan said.

The other changes in the team have come in the form of blooding youngsters Varun Sood,Milind Kumar and Mohit Sharma. All three youngsters including Sood performed well during the U-22 CK Nayudu trophy in January and the team management is hopeful that they will transfer their good form to the senior side. “These youngsters have performed really well in the C K Nayudu trophy as well as the DDCA league and I am hopeful they will shine for us,” Sharma said.

Robin Bisht, the Delhi wicketkeeper who had a good Ranji season unlike many of his teammates also said that he was confident of continuing his good run. “Everyone was really down after what happened in the Ranji trophy,we are all motivated to do well this time,ab toh jeetna hi hai.”
