After DMRC liquor rule change, Noida excise dept says only one bottle allowed

(Representational image) A day after the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) clarified that commuters were allowed to carry two sealed bottles of alcohol on its network, the Noida Excise department issued a word of caution regarding metro stations in its jurisdiction.
Officials from Noida said the current rule permits import of only one unsealed bottle from adjoining Delhi or Haryana, whether by the metro or via road. “Although the Delhi Metro has allowed commuters to carry two sealed bottles of liquor, the rules of the Uttar Pradesh Excise Department apply in its jurisdiction, irrespective of any changes in Delhi,” a senior Noida District Excise official said.
The officer added that the excise department will step up vigilance at metro stations and take legal action against commuters carrying more than one sealed liquor bottle from outside UP. The officer said efforts would be made to raise awareness among commuters regarding the excise rules in UP to avoid inconvenience.
In case liquor over and above the permitted quantity was recovered from someone travelling into its jurisdiction, the official said, action is taken under Section 63 of the Excise Act (penalty for unlawful import, export, transport, manufacture, possession, sale) which is a non-bailable offence.

According to the Delhi Metro, a committee comprising officials from the CISF and the DMRC reviewed the list of items allowed to be carried in trains.
The DMRC has, however, requested passengers to maintain proper decorum while travelling and warned that any commuter found behaving in an indecent manner under the influence of alcohol will face suitable action as per law.
