Accused should be given strictest punishment, says famlly of Delhi girl pushed off terrace

On Tuesday morning, the injured Neha succumbed to her injuries in Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.

“Multiple teams from Jyoti Nagar police station, Gokulpuri subdivision and Operations unit of North East were deployed to trace the accused, Taufeeq. He was arrested on Tuesday night from Rampur in Uttar Pradesh,” DCP (North East) Ashish Mishra said.

Neha’s father Surendra works as a security guard, and she recently took up a job in a private firm. She studied till Class 12 and could not go to college because of the family’s poor financial condition, police sources said.

Anticipating communal tension, the police, meanwhile, have stepped up security in the area.

Gaurav Gupta, Additional DCP (North East) said that Neha’s family was contemplating getting her married soon.

“Neha and the accused knew each other but she had not

been speaking to him for

some time. The accused found out that her family was planning to get her married. He was enraged,” he said.

A police officer said that he wore a burqa and called her to the terrace of the five-storey building. “They likely had an argument there after which he pushed her,” said the officer.

Taufeeq was no stranger to the family. “We have known him for three years… We considered him our brother. I don’t know what happened in the last few months. He began insisting on marrying my sister. My family is completely distraught after what has happened,” Neha’s sister had earlier told The Indian Express.

The family now has only one demand — that Taufeeq be given the strictest punishment.

“We cremated her at around 2 pm. At 4 pm, we found out that he had been arrested. The only demand we have is that he should be given the strictest possible punishment,” Sonia said.
