(Screengrab)Days after a 22-year-old was mowed down by a car driving on the wrong side of Gurgaon’s Golf Course Road, the police have added a new section in the case after the accused failed to present his driver’s licence.
The car, a Mahindra XUV EXD, that collided with the victim, Akshat Garg, on Golf Course Road on Sunday was purchased in July and had two pending challans. The police said that the accused could not present his driver’s licence on the day after which they sent a notice.
“The deadline to submit the licence was on Friday, and he has failed to present it. We have added Section 181 of the Motor Vehicles Act in the case. As per the section, whoever drives a motor vehicle in contravention of Section 3 or Section 4 (which prohibits driving vehicle without a licence) shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three months, or with a fine which may extend to Rs 500, or with both.
The accused has been identified as Kuldeep Kumar Thakur, a 25-year-old who hails from Bihar’s Madhubani. As per the registration details of the accused’s car, the vehicle had two pending challans. He runs a media firm that markets political parties, the police said. The car sported the sticker of the BJP candidate from Palwal, Gaurav Gautam.
Meanwhile, a biker community group Akshat was a part of has called for a protest ride on September 29 to demand better road safety. “Join us on a protest ride to demand safer roads and stricter penalties for wrong-side driving. A young biker’s life was senselessly taken by Kuldeep Thakur, who was granted bail within just 30 minutes. Let’s ride together to honour the memory of Akshat and demand justice,” the statement by the motorcycling group said. The ride is scheduled to start around 7 am from Delhi’s Dhaula Kuan till the accident spot near DLF Phase 2 metro station.
