‘Absence of fear is a licence to chase dreams’

Quest asked students about fear — their fears, ways to overcome them and what they would do if they had no fears at all. Here’s what they said.

Quest asked students about fear — their fears, ways to overcome them and what they would do if they had no fears at all. Here’s what they said.

Fear is a natural phenomenon. From a child to an adult, everybody has something that they are afraid of. But fear is nothing but an obstacle in the way of progress. I’d like to imagine how my life would be if I wasn’t afraid of anything. Life would be different. I would be able to let myself go,without worrying about what happens next. An unknown future is our greatest fear at times. But if I wasn’t afraid,I would be able to enjoy to the fullest. I have the desire to do many things but it’s my fear that comes in the way. Stage fear is one which I would love to overcome. Dancing has always been more than just a hobby to me. It’s my passion. But due to my fear,I have never been able to perform in public. Whether I’m happy or sad, angry or cheerful, dance has always been my way to express my mood. But because of my fear,no one knows that I’m a good dancer. Another fear that stops me from doing things at times is the fear of heights. But if I wasn’t afraid,I would surely like to try skydiving once. Also,I would like to go on the ‘Singapore Flyer’ which is a giant ferris wheel in Singapore. At 541 feet,it is the tallest ferris wheel in the world. It would be so amazing to give it a try. Stage fear and the fear of heights are some of the common fears that many people have. But another strange fear that I have is the fear of looking into a mirror when it is dark. Thanks to all the ghosts and spirits stories. I would do many things if I wasn’t afraid. But most of all,I would love to live my life without fearing my fears.

I would walk down the floor with no shame to shred. With a mind with nothing to bear, with a soul with nothing to fear,in the deafening silence of the dark,I would walk through the streets; so stark….

Overhearing my pitiful thought, his sweet attention I bought,“Mark my words”,said he,“thou life not led to please the other.” Nodding my head I thought to me

How I wish I could believe thee words dear brother…

Sometimes its fear, other times the consequences. Many a time,in life,we fail to accomplish tasks, goals and our ambitions because of some or the other reason.

I would jump off a 200-storey building in an attempt to fly if I was not afraid of falling. I would dive into the Atlantic Ocean if I was not afraid of drowning,I would propose the girl I love if I was not afraid of being ridiculed.

Life’s full of problems and difficulties, but they are just like big cotton bags, they look huge for those who see them but are in fact light for those who are carrying them.

I would rather live life king-size; The best I can make of it,If I was not afraid to die.

All of us at some point are afraid of one thing or the other. It is fear that keeps us from doing something. There are many things that we want to do but our fear restricts us. Although I am not particularly afraid of anything, there are certain things which I would like to do if given the liberty. All of us are afraid of,or should I say respect the law, which keeps us from doing anything wrong. If I wasn’t afraid of the law I would like to take up the task of cleansing our nation of many evils. I would fight against all the corrupt people who have stopped the nation from progressing. I would put all criminals and terrorists behind the bars. It is a matter of great shame that the people who are responsible to uphold law and order, themselves break the rules. I would like to take strict action against them. This is what I would like to do if I wasn’t afraid.

The beauty of recklessness is that it doesn’t require much thinking. There is a thin line between not being afraid and stupidity . If I weren’t afraid then I would shout from my rooftop and let people know that I can be angry too. I would tell my mom to just listen to my problems instead of making biased judgements. It would be so much easier to just correct older people when they are genuinely wrong and not get judged. If I weren’t afraid I’d tell my parents that they have raised an exceptional child who can make her own decisions and learn from her mistakes. Trust is all that we require and then, maybe,we do not need to be afraid anymore.

Our world is full of fears. We all have some or the other fear in life. We are afraid of being exploited, failures, running out of time, being isolated, being uncared for, etc. The list is never-ending. Fear has the ability to numb the senses. We hide from them and this only helps amplifies fear. If we weren’t afraid we would be able to do what we wish to do. For instance,we all dream of bringing about a change in our world,in our society and in our lifestyles. But how many of us are really able to accomplish these dreams? The number is very few. We all are afraid of being killed or harassed by the wrong-doers. And so,we let go of these dreams because most of us do not want our families to suffer.

Let us take another example. We all strive to achieve success. We are always looking for opportunities to outshine our mates because we have the fear of being left behind. We get so much involved in this blind race that we forget the real meaning of life. We tend to overlook the small things which give us happiness.

We have so many examples to quote. Summing up,I would like to say that if we weren’t afraid we would be able to live our lives to the fullest. We should try to face our fears and conquer them. It has been rightly said by Paulo Coelho,“Don’t give in to your fears. If you do,you won’t be able to talk to your heart”.

Being afraid is a normal human tendency and,I,personally,am afraid of almost everything that’s queer, dangerous, wild and hazardous. I sometimes ponder that if I hadn’t been afraid,I could do a lot of things with ease; things like sitting in a lion’s den and getting a photograph clicked with the pride. I admire people who play with fire, walk through it and come out without a single burnt patch. I sometimes imagine myself jumping off a cliff, without the fear of losing my life. Most importantly,I’d steal all the arms and ammunition of terrorists and contribute to world peace.

Perhaps, the only way fear can rightly be explained is,as the (F)alse (E)vidence (A)ppearing to be (R)eal. But as it is said, they are in us and,if we want,we could eliminate them. Once we overcome fear, all we are left with is peace. If I could overcome my deepest fears I would love to give a performance of aerial acrobatics to a packed audience. The fears I have are many. Acrophobia for one and the lack of pristine athleticism and debilitating stage fright being the others. My interest in sports and other athletic activities was negligible,my desire for personal fitness was far from practical and my ability to keep composure in front of a large group was always lacking.  That is,until I stumbled upon aerial circus arts, which as dramatic as it sounds, truly changed my life. I was familiar with traditional circuses as a child. Sure, they were amazing, but I never really thought too much about it. This, however, left me completely captivated. Not only did it portray an incredible degree of skill, but the production itself managed to use circus skills as a basis for a cohesive theatrical production. Aerial acts, which feature one or more performers creating artistic poses or dynamic movements on some sort of apparatus suspended from the ceiling were particularly captivating for its skill level and artistic grandeur. What made me take to aerial arts was that they offered a challenge to overcome one’s fears and was a great workout regime. It also allows groups of people to collaborate, share, and build upon each other’s ideas, technique and invented movements. The fears are plenty, acting as irrevocable deterrents in my path to reach the heights, quite literally. I hope to overcome them soon and give a scintillating performance.
