While Satyender Jain was appointed co-in-charge for Punjab, former AAP Delhi chief Gopal Rai was named in-charge for Gujarat.

Saurabh Bharadwaj, Manish SisodiaSaurabh Bharadwaj named chief of AAP Delhi unit; Manish Sisodia to be in-charge of Punjab.

Smarting from its defeat in the Delhi elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday announced a major organisational reshuffle, assigning new roles to several leaders, after holding a key meeting of its Political Affairs Committee (PAC).

The party decided to relieve Gopal Rai of his duties as AAP’s Delhi president and replaced him with former Delhi minister Saurabh Bhardwaj. Rai will now serve as AAP’s in-charge in Gujarat, where the party has a foot in the door by securing a vote share of almost 13 per cent in the 2022 Assembly polls.

AAP also decided to appoint former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia as the Punjab in-charge. Elections are due to be held in Punjab in 2027 and the AAP is keen to ensure that it retains power in the state. AAP top gun Satyender Jain was appointed co-in-charge for Punjab.

While Sandeep Pathak, national general secretary, AAP, was given the charge of Chhattisgarh, Pankaj Gupta, the party’s national secretary, was given the charge of Goa. AAP Doda MLA Mehraj Malik was appointed the chief of the party’s Jammu and Kashmir unit.

The decisions were announced after the PAC meeting at AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal’s residence.

Addressing a press conference later, Pathak said, “First, the expansion of the organisation and the format of the organisation were discussed. After that, the appointment of in-charges in four states has been approved and the appointment of new presidents in two states has been approved.”

“Arvind Kejriwal along with the PAC committee has taken this decision together. All of us are going to work hard to make the party stronger in our respective states,” Bhardwaj said. “Although the AAP lost in Delhi, there was only a 2 percentage (point) difference between the AAP’s and the BJP’s vote share, this means that half of Delhi still wants Arvind Kejriwal, despite the BJP’s planning and plotting and buying of votes and promises such as the Rs 2,500 monthly payout for women, which BJP leaders are now not ready to speak on,” he added.
