9,000 appear for CATE

Over 9,000 students appeared for the Combined Aptitude Test for English across the 17 designated centres in Delhi University on Wednesday.

Over 9,000 students appeared for the Combined Aptitude Test for English (CATE) across the 17 designated centres in Delhi University on Wednesday.

“The exam went on as scheduled and no glitches were notified by the candidates. All the issues of the students have been sorted out,” said Tapan Basu, convenor,CATE.

Admit cards were made available online and could be collected from the centres as well. However, some students were unaware of its availability online. “I had the impression that the admit card would reach me by post, but then I was told that they can be downloaded online,” said Shubashish Barua, who took the exam on Wednesday.

Irfa, another candidate, said,“I could not download my form from the website. But the department at LSR was very helpful and arranged it for me.” Harshita Bathwal,a candidate appearing at LSR College, said: “My roll number was not there on the list. They told me this was due to a misprint.”

Most students found the paper relatively easy. Kumudhi Arora ,a candidate at Satyawati College said,“The paper was easy, but the second section was lengthy. I couldn’t answer all questions in the given time”. Another student added: “The first part was the objective section which had multiple choice questions based on grammar and general knowledge of literature. The second section was the subjective section which required you to write essays.”

While HoD English Sumanyu Sathpathy had initially claimed that the paper would not be related to CBSE’s English course, most candidates thought the paper was based on their Plus II English curriculum. “In comprehension,we had Aunt Jennifer’s poem Tiger. It was really unexpected, but I was relieved as I had studied it before.”

While some prepared on their own using the Internet and grammar books, others took professional help. “I took a two-month crash course from Study Circle,” a candidate said. Surprisingly, some candidates did not prepare thinking the exam will challenge only their aptitude skills and not theoretical knowledge. A candidate said,“I am not worried or nervous. If I have the aptitude for English language,I will qualify.”

Introduction of the new elimination criterion,as per which which Section B of only those students papers who have cleared Section will be checked did not seem to bother many candidates.
