62,000 applications for 1,750 JNU seats

Jawaharlal Nehru University received more than 62,000 applications against 1,750 seats in its Masters courses.

Jawaharlal Nehru University received more than 62,000 applications against 1,750 seats in its Masters courses for the academic session 2013-14.

Results for post-graduate admissions were announced on July 17. Those for MPhil and PhD courses have also been announced.

The university received a maximum of 7,800 applications against 48 seats in Masters in Computer Applications course. An official in the JNU admissions office said the MCA course has always had many takers and that this year’s figure was higher than the number of applicants last year.

Although the intake capacity has not changed, the number of applications has gone up by around 11,000. According to JNU records, the university received 51,000 applications for 1,700 seats in 2012-13 and nearly the same number in 2011-12.

JNU authorities attributed the increase in the number of applications to the growing demand for its International Relations course. The university received the second highest number of applications for the course this year.

“Although we haven’t analysed our admission data,it looks like the popularity of the course in International Relations is the reason for the increased number of applications,” JNU spokesperson Poonam Kudaisiya said.

The university has added one more course this year — MA in Philosophy — which has received about 500 applications.
